At each call the barge loads and unloads a fixed set of containers. The on-board count rises to 3 at Rotterdam, peaks at 5 at Nijmegen, drops to 2 at Duisburg, then empties at Cologne.
When a leg is tight, a container is dropped early at an intermediate call (Duisburg) before its final terminal. A later barge on a crossing route picks it up and carries it to the off-rotation inland customer — or a truck completes the last leg by road when the barge would miss the deadline.
